Knox writes Shaw, secretary to President Adams, requesting that his son Henry, a lieutenant in the Navy, be assigned to the Frigate Constitution. Knox reminds Shaw that Knox already objected "verbally" to his son being assigned to the Boston. He has just spoken with Captain [Silas] Talbot (new captain of the Constitution), who has agreed to take Knox Jr. as an officer. See GLC02437.07279 and GLC02437.07282 for related items.

Knox received Smith's letter of January 5. Knox expresses his deep gratitude for Smith's loan to him. Knox would like to pay more of it back but that is difficult for him at this time. Instructs on facilitating movement on the Washington-Rochambeau route southward toward Yorktown. Stevens is to head toward Christiana Bridge with Colonel John Lamb's regiment, and then on to Head of Elk. Stevens was commanding officer of an artillery regiment in the Continental Army.

Reports that the corps in the detachment at West Point have been dissolved, except for those soldiers whose terms of service have not expired. These 500 men will be commanded by Colonel [Henry] Jackson, presumably at West Point. There is also one corps of artillery commanded by Major Sebastian Bauman. Asks Steuben to instruct Jackson on the mode by which the remaining soldiers will be mustered and inspected. Plans to depart soon for Boston, leaving Jackson in charge.

Refers to a recent letter from Steuben transmitting papers from General [Jethro] Sumner of North Carolina. Discusses matters pertaining to the Society of the Cincinnati, referring to an upcoming meeting in May at Philadelphia. Writes that many opponents of the society claim it "was formed in Europe to overturn our happy constitutions." Refers to objections raised by Aedanus Burke of South Carolina, who argues that the society is a hereditary nobility. Reports that Legislature of Massachusetts has chosen a committee to investigate associations that promote hereditary nobility.

Replies to a letter in which Stoughton informed Knox that Maurice (or Morris) Kelly, one of Knox's servants, recently solicited him for employment; Stoughton refused because Kelly had not obtained a discharge from Knox (refer to GLC02437.03845). Knox confirms that Kelly had asked him for a discharge, but Knox had not granted it due to the short notice. Kelly then informed Knox his child was sick, Knox offered him a discharge, and Kelly left with no notice. Knox will therefore not hire him again.

The other, written in a different hand, states: "Twenty five miscellaneous letters-"

Writes in references to lands in Peterborough, New Hampshire that his late father-in-law Thomas Flucker purchased from Richard Gredley. Says there has been illegal sales of some of these lands for the non-payment of taxes by squatters. Notes he has employed a Mr. Otis (Harrison Gray Otis) of Boston to help him with this situation. Comments "As soon as the lands shall be entirely disentangled, which will not be a work of much difficulty they will be for sale." Reports that Otis can inform him on how the matter currently stands.

Apologizes for not responding to Sullivan's earlier request for information on a canal engineer from Europe who recently arrived in Philadelphia (see GLC02437.05964). Knox waited to write until the engineer, Mr. Weston, an Englishman, arrived in the city from the countryside. This still has not happened. Will ask Mr. Morris if Mr. Weston can be spared to help on Sullivan's project at the Middlesex Canal Company. Knox writes Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert "on behalf of Mr. Charles Russel late acting first Lieutenant and Mr. William Amory." Knox explains they left the ship Constitution because they did not get their commissions. They are of good character and they wish to solicit President John Adams "that they may be permitted to act on board of some other ship in their former ranks until it shall be proved by Capt. Nicholson himself whether they are or are not worthy of the Commissions." Docket says the letter also went to Charles Russel.

Knox received Stoddert's letter of October 6 "through Capt. Nicholson." He is grateful to Stoddert for commissioning his son "on board of the constellation." The ship has not arrived yet in New York, however, and Knox asks that Stoddert order his son Henry to duty immediately when the ship is ready.
