At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Knox, who refers to himself in the third person throughout. Knox states that he is exempt from the local taxes of Philadelphia the same as any member of Congress. Says this was the case in New York. Says he would only have to pay taxes if he owned and occupied real estate.
