Title: [Pardon of Minard Granger for counterfeiting coins].

Countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. Minard Granger was convicted in October, 1853, and imprisoned in Auburn, New York. Buchanan pardoned Granger near the end of his sentence on the recommendation of his trial judge N. K. Hall. Reasons cited were that Granger gave valuable information to the marshal after his conviction and that his health had been destroyed by imprisonment. Incldues a blue paper ribbon on second page.

It would afford me great pleasure & promote my own comfort & happiness to have you for a house keeper. Still I think you ought to marry, should a favorable opportunity offer. There is nothing very desirable in the situation of an old maid; still it is less comfortless than that of an unhappy wife."

Buchanan's delaying tactics the following year as Secretary of State under Tyler allowed the president to ask for a declaration of war against Mexico. A portion of the letter on p. 1 was removed by cutting, probably by Buchanan. With free frank.

Written as Senator from Pennsylvania, regarding the bill for admission of Texas to the Union and South Carolina's opposition to another Tariff bill. Buchanan argues that an independent Texas would be better for America unless Great Britain were to annex it. He also dismisses South Carolina's (and Calhoun's) complaint that the Tariff impoverished the South by pointing to cheap cotton production in newer states like Mississippi or Alabama. (Recent historians agree with him.)
