Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thanks her for her letter. Disapproves of the remarks of her "female teacher" about religion and is pleased that she also disapproves. For him, "the Christian religion & the teachings of our Saviour and his Apostles are necessary both for this life and the life to come." Asks news of her brother, James. Reports that they have had good sleeping weather.
