Sometimes signs as "Biron." Churchill's mother was Drazilla of St. Joseph Co., Burr Oak, Mich. His regiment served at Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg and in the Atlanta campaign. His last letter in the field is dated Atlanta 8/24/1864 (#25); he was captured sometime after. In letter #26 of 4/11/1865 dated from General Hospital, David's Island, NY, a nurse writes that Byron was imprisoned "in that awful southern prison" at Florence SC for the winter, was exchanged 3/1/1865, spent a month in Hospital at Wilmington and was sent to NY. Inhabitants of Cayuga County, New York, ask Congress to pass a law "reducing all the rebellious States to Territories declare all the slaves free and as soon as the rebels can be drove out of a State or subdued give each resident of the State without regard to color a certain number of acres of land and so of legal Persons who will become occupants from other parts arm the men declare every male inhabitant 21 years of age or over a legal voter and give the inhabitants a right to form a State upon free republican principles." Signed by Fitch and 22 other residents of Scipio and Venice.

Introduction of French engineer, Colonel Louis des Hayes de la Radiere, who was to superintend fortifications on the North (Hudson) River. Washington appointed de la Radiere to oversee the construction of the Hudson's Highlands in late 1777, but a dispute with General Israel Putnam, commander at the Highlands, caused de la Radiere to return to Washington's camp. Putnam went on leave in March of 1778 and General McDougall assumed his command. Shortly thereafter, Washington sent de la Radiere back.
