Authorizes Hamilton to make his Brigade Head Quarters with his Wisconsin regiment. Must have been written during 1861, since this was the only year during which Hamilton would have been in the vicinity of Maryland and under Bank's command during the month of December. Banks resigned from the army in April 1863, and in December 1862 he was serving in the Western theater.

Differentiates between the South Carolina regiment and "our" men, from the "upcountry"; "they can stand that climate better than others." Title: to Thomas Jordan

Possibly written in Virginia. Two days before the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Confederate General Evans informs Colonel Jordan that "the Enemy have appeared in the Turnpike between Dranesville and this place, in considerable force." Reports that he is making preparations to meet the Union force, and requests reinforcements. In a postscript, he states that Union soldiers "appeared about 3 P.M. today within 10 miles of this place- when they ran my picketts in." Docketed by General Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard (in pencil), commanding troops in Northern Virginia.

Gist, an acting adjutant and inspector general, states "The 16, Reg't Col Young will be charged with the special [Horton?] Service for the next ten days, they have no arms- I recommend that ... arms be issued to Col Young with ten rounds of ammunition, to be returned, if not used, at the expiration of the special service with which his Reg't is charged."

Hill was located near Richmond at the time as well. Written during the Peninsula Campaign, shortly before the Seven Days.

Writes to a Colonel whose name is unspecified the day before Union General William T. Sherman's troops destroyed much of Columbia (Law was one general in charge of evacuating the city). Requests that forces under Captain D. H. Hamilton (possibly Daniel H. Hamilton), Provost Marshal, be ordered to report to him. Further requests "that the Battalion of State Cadets be also ordered to report to me for police duty in the city." Notes that the force under his command for police duty is insufficient. Reports that there has been no mail for two months, but the previous day, received shocking news (possibly referring to secession of several southern states): "The news which has reached us startles the most lethargic. Before what are we standing? I dare not answer it to myself... Let me now add that should our state need my services, I beg you will offer them, to be used by her in whatever way may to her seem best." Written at Fort Wise.
