At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Confederate Major General Hoke orders Parker to "Inform Genl Hardee in my name the true state of affairs." Goes on to instruct, "be careful not to allow the dispatch to fall into the hands of the Enemy." Also tells him to inform General Braxton Bragg and to have General Johnson Hagood give Colonel Jackson assistance. Same message in slightly different words written on verso.
