At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Pettigrew reports to Manigault (1817-1874), Colonel of Ordnance, that General P.G.T. Beauregard, Commander of forces at Charleston Harbor, has ordered that the Board of Ordnance should supply Pettigrew with grape shot and cases. Contains two notes at the bottom of the page, one written in pencil and one in pen, discussing details of the ordnance requested.
