Senator Adams praises the value of "ancient learning," but writes this letter in English because he has not used his knowledge of the ancient language in a long time and feels his skill may have diminished. He then comments on the law books Everett has read, specifically works by Lord Coke and Blackstone. He also recommends several other works for Everett to read. Adams concludes with some comments about his family.

Legal brief in the suit of Jones, surviving partner of Farrell and Jones, of Great Britain, against Thomas Walker, Defendant, in debt on bond before the Federal Circuit Court, Richmond, Va. Entirely in the hand of Edmund Pendleton. Probably 1791. One of the greatest post-war problems in Virginia was the settlement of pre-war debts with English merchants, required by the Treaty of Peace, but virtually impossible in the inflation-ridden, cash poor economy of post-war Virginia.
