At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Declines serving on a George Washington Committee because he has too many commitments already. Typed on Department of Commerce stationery in black ink with header Department of Commerce/Office of the Secretary/Washington. Stationery has a United States governmental watermark on the upper left side. The initials HH.KA (typed) are on the lower left. One bust engraving of Herbert Hoover included.
