Tells of Colonel Harland being asked to command a Brigade consisting of the 8th, 11th of Connecticut and 4th of Rhode Island regiments making him a Colonel Commanding with the powers of a Brigadier. Coit is very sad as Harland will have his offices away from the rest of the camp. Is not sure he will be offered a position in Harland's staff. Says the regiment is preparing to march and has made rations for a three day tour. Believes they are headed to Goldsboro.

Writes of leaving Newbern by train and waiting to board a steam ship that would take the troops to an unknown destination. Before the steam ship can depart, word comes from General Burnside of the capture of Richmond and negates the need for the intended mission. The regiment is ordered back to Morehead City and Coit believes the next step is to head for James River. Mentions a quiet Fourth of July passed by staying in an abandoned barn with the regiment.

Writes of the trip to Fort Monroe by boat. There are speculations as to their destination but Coit believes they are being sent as reinforcements to General McClellan. Writes, "I shall go into battle confident that God will again show forth his great mercy towards us all and will in answer to prayer spare my life." Written on board the ship "the Guide" off the Virginia Coast.

Accompanied by three war-era notes from 1862 and three pressed flowers, originally contained in Union General Averell's Civil War-era diaries (see GLC06581.01-.03). One note a receipt from E. Owen & Son dated 26 December 1862, another on 1862 Army of the Potomac stationary is dated 10 March 1863 on the verso, and a third indicating there are "10 Rebels at Harpers' Mill" is undated. The flowers were associated with the dates: 5 June 1861, 24 December 1861, and 29 November 1863. Extent reflects the measurements of the largest note.

"…[we] marched through the city to Fort Stevens in front of which we found the rebels in force but our brigade was not engaged with them, the 3d Brigade came up the next day and had quite a little fight, President Lincoln and wife and several other distinguished persons were out to see the fight. A surgeon standing beside Mr. Lincoln and conversing with him was wounded in the leg but this did not drive him away…"

Is working on muster and pay rolls every night until 11:00, and reports that he sent rolls to Washington, D.C. Mentions picket duty near a grist mill and his relationship with the mill's owners. References poor treatment of Union soldiers in Southern camps, and tells story of a Seargeant Freelove who was captured and taken prisoner by the Confederates…

Writes, "they are scattered in the woods and I fear have lost nearly all their horses." States that two companies have gone to assist. Written on stationary marked Headquarters, 3rd Division, 8th Army Corps.

Copy of a telegram from Colonel Toland possibly to General Eliakim P. Scammon. Written in cypher in one hand, and decoded underneath possibly in the hand of Scammon. Toland writes that the powder and fuse are not in any of the wagons and that Madden thinks they were left in the staff train. Informs that they will leave soon and that, "if the enemy has retreated and suspect our plan it will be a close race they having the shortest road." Asks for reliable information on where the enemy is going.

Written from camp in the field near Cold Harbor.
