At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published at 70 Camp Street. Article on University of Louisiana. Description of the New Orleans celebration of George Washington's birthday takes up three quarters of the front page. Describes an "Imposing Military Display." Short item on arrival of Mrs. Jefferson Davis in New Orleans to visit her father. Reference to the safe arrival of James Redpath and John Brown Jr. in Haiti with a group of "colored emigrants" -- the former news of their capture off the coast of Georgia was false. Printing of the "Official Journal of the Convention of the State of Louisiana" on page 2 and part of page 3 -- a total of 21 ordinances, each with a French translation. Page 3 has correspondence from Washington saying "Public attention is now directed almost exclusively to the triumphal march of the Abolition Emperor towards his capital." Page 6 account of Lincoln's furitive trip through Baltimore on the way to Washington.
