Says she was hired as a chambermaid to Coombs, who was the captain of the "Louisville," from July 1861-September 1862. She was then hired again in December 1862 and was under his employ until the ship was captured by U.S. forces. She was hired for $20/month. Claims she was last paid in April 1862. A private letter in which Ericsson defends the merits of his screw propeller over Steven's Scull. Claims that reports that the scull beat his ship are misleading. Accompanied by a two page manuscript autographed by Ericsson that details his invention. John Ericsson invented the screw propeller, which replaced the paddle wheel and remains the most common form of marine propulsion to this day. James Bennett was editor of the New York Herald.

Abram Bogart's correspondence discusses the war and his experience in the army. The collection of letters primarily details army life, much of which focuses on his disdain for senior officers and the treatment of privates in the army. The vast majority of the letters are written to his wife, with some of them also addressed to their children. Bogart struggles with loneliness and often complains of homesickness throughout the collection. Of particular interest are his war date letters from South Carolina and Florida.
