At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The wife of John C. Frémont thanks an unidentified correspondent "for the beautifully bound copy of the Report" that he sent her, probably referring to the report of Frémont's expedition to the Oregon Territory in 1844. Hopes that when Frémont returns and the third report is published, "you will not be prevented by the advertising system from giving it to the best artist." Year inferred.
