Tells Ogden the story of a soldier named Brown. Brown is ailing and destitute, and unable to pay his rent. His wife has absconded after being brought under investigation in the death of her child from an overdose of laudanum. Says Brown remains ill with a huge debt owed to his landlady. Requests that Ogden send her money and try to get in touch with his mother, who lives in Brownstown, Maine.

Requests that his personal items be sent to the family by express. Concludes by stating her wish that he was buried closer, but expresses her thanks that he is being given a proper burial.

Mentions being surprised at Mr. Hathaway's death because he had received notice from "Newton," just after the battle, that he was only slightly wounded. Says Newton informed him that the ball had been extracted from Hathaway's leg, and he was doing nicely. Informs Ogden that Mrs. Garde requests that Ogden send her information regarding Hathaway's stay in Philadelphia. She would like to know whether he mentioned her name, or the names of any of his kin. Concludes by thanking Ogden for taking care of him and changing him to a belief in "Christ the saviour of sinners."

In a postscript, states that Ogden will not have to have her letter translated.

Thanks Ogden for sending his son's personal belongings to Wisconsin, and for promising to return his body. Mentions that families making this request usually do not receive the correct body. States, "we place every confidence in you, Madame! That you will certainly be informed and know which the grave of my son is, that our mind may not be grieved more by deception." Enclosed thirty dollars in the letter (not included), for the purchase of an air-tight coffin. In a postscript, asks that she responds to his letter upon its arrival.

Pankow, who was engaged to William Hartman, tells Ogden that he kept two pictures of the two of them. Requests Ogden sends her the pictures if possible. Mentions that Mr. Hartman's son-in-law's brother, a "comrade of William," would have visited Ogden when he was in Philadelphia, but did not receive the letter in time. States that the family received the body and opened the coffin because they "could not bear to have the body of their beloved son as near and not see him." She concludes by thanking Ogden for caring for William.

Writes that the Mr. Jones of whom Mr. Ogden speaks was not the "man that the draft belonged to." Says the Mr. Jones in question is a "single man about 22 years of age and enlisted in the 101st Regt." Jones is at the Broad and Cherry Street Hospital. He returns the letter, telling her that Jones will come to Ogden to get the draft because he is "in want of the money very much." Mr. Jones explains that if the Mr. Jones in question needs more money, he should write to him, and he will send him some.

Describes the scenery of his new surroundings and complains of the cold. He tells her about mountain climbing in Maine and New Hampshire, and sightseeing in Boston and New York. Says he plans on visiting the hospital soon, and requests that Ogden please send a copy of his letter to Cornelia because writing materials are scarce, and he left his behind.

States she hopes that Ogden's efforts are rewarded by God, and asks that Ogden please write to inform her whether or not Alphonse will obtain a discharge.

State is not listed, but was likely written from Greenwich, New York.

Mentions that Annie, [Latham], and Lilly filled a pushcart, and with the aid of an African American man brought it to the ward of a hospital. Upon arriving there, she found that the doctor was not there. Writes that Mr. Harmon was at their house that morning and left a note from the doctor. Written to "Sallie," likely referring to Sarah Ogden.

Mentions that their most recent arrivals to the hospital are "a very small number of paroled prisoners" and 350 wounded soldiers from City Point. Says everything seems "very uncertain," and she believes that the grief and sadness of the nation appears to be the only definite thing.
