At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that since last October, Traux has heard from neither her husband nor his brother, Jacob Traux. Says she wants to know where her husband is and whether he is sick or dead. Asks if Ogden happens to find him, she has him write to her immediately. The last she heard, her husband and his brother were going to Helena. Asks Ogden to send any word concerning their whereabouts or condition.
