Asks Knox if he will help his friend Stephen Chase, a law student, who is publishing an edition of "Sullivan's Lectures on the Feudal Law." Wait wonders if he could help Chase in "procuring a few great names," such as President [John] Adams and Governor [Caleb] Strong, in addition to Knox himself (perhaps for interviews for the book). Adds that Wait and a Mr. Hopkins are publishing the book with Chase, and if it is successful, there may be more books to be published, and Wait will be able to overcome financial hardship.

Marked "Copy." Letter in a secretarial hand. Says that Joel Barlow, later known as one of the Connecticut Wits, will deliver this letter. Knox identifies Barlow as the author of "The vision of Columbus," a long epic poem in heroic couplets. Barlow went to Europe as an agent for a company that wanted to sell western lands to French emigrants. Knox says Barlow is traveling with the son of Nathanael Greene, George Washington Greene, who is to study with Lafayette in France. Writes to accept the offer proposed by General [Henry] Knox in his last letter. Declares that he is under great "obligation to the Genl for his favourable opinion of my integrity, I shall ever do my Best Endeavors for the public good and the Genl's approbation."
