At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Recommends Knox appoints Nehemiah Freeman, Constant's Freeman son, to a lieutenancy in the Corps of Artillery. Notes Freeman is a "young gentleman of about 25 years, a man of strict honor and integrity, an active, capable, handsome, well made young fellow, and will do honor to any service…" "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
