Copy of a report on the supplies of R. S. Gardner, a lieutenant in the 3rd Provisional Brigade to Colonel Eliakim P. Scammon, as Colonel of the same brigade. The Board of Survey members were appointed under special orders no. 48. Signed by More as Captain, Company I, 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, J.R. McMullin as Captain, 1st Battery Ohio Artillery, and James Taylor as 1st Lieutenant, 30th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Marked cypher at top. Brigadier General Kelley writes to Brigadier General Scammon discussing the journey of General William Woods Averell from Beverly to Lewisburg, West Virginia. States he is taking 10 days of rations. Advises that Scammon give General Alfred Napoleon Alexander Duffie the same orders as Averell so they may reach Lewisburg with their troops at the same time. Mentions Confederate deserters, "Quite a number of Jacksons men after being so severely whipped at Bulltown have deserted and come inside our lines."

Describes the Dress Parade and writes that he believes his performance to have gone very well. The townspeople are very kind to the soldiers and have given them bread and apples. The field staff, including Coit, are staying in an empty house which the townspeople believe to be haunted. Also describes the "splendid" greenhouse bouquet that he received when leaving Hartford and carried to Long Island, where it sits on the mantle in the dining room of the "haunted" house. Reports that he will soon have a servant. Written from Camp Buckingham.

Written on board the ship "the Sentinal." Believes that the 8th regiment and other regiments in the brigade will sail tomorrow. Gives details of life on the ship including the poor quality of the food, water and sanitation. Also mentions five rebel deserters who had captured a small ship and interacted with the soldiers onboard the Sentinel. Reports that the rebels told the soldiers of the "strong Union feeling" among many of the rebel troops.

Responds to his mother's concerns expressed in a previous letter. She had written that "Rev. Mr. Hall" had reported to her that Coit was looking very thin through the face. Coit responds by saying he has never seen or met Hall and that his mother should take such reports with a grain of salt. Reports on smaller skirmishes with the rebels around Fort Macon and believes General Burnside will soon command them to take the fort. Also writes of the bad supply of food.
