At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Major General Logan writes from the field near Gordon's Gap. Instructs Smith to send food for General Osterhaus, who has not received forage since he left Rossville, Georgia (often referred to as Rossville Gap). Will send his own cavalry tomorrow to meet Smith and General Grenville Dodge's train. Requests that Smith send a quartermaster to assist him in the field. Written on Headquarters, Fifteenth Army Corps stationery.
