Letter written by "F.H." (possibly Frederick Humphrey, chaplain of the 12th Iowa Regiment who was mustered into the regiment on 23 June 1864). "Letter from an Eye-Witness" details the victory of Union General Andrew Smith over Confederate Cavalry General Nathan Bedford Forrest from the point of view of the 12th Iowa. Narrative climaxes when "the tide of battle ebbs and flows beneath the hot rays of a July sun. Title: [Manuscript Civil War map of the Battle of Williamsburg]

Shows the troop positions of forces under Union generals Philip Kearney and Joseph Hooker, as well as the Confederate line. Also shows the open field where the combatants met, Fort Magruder, and other structures. Smith is identified on the docket as "Bvt. Col. Henry W. Smith." He joined the 66th Pennsylvania Volunteers in March 1862. The Battle of Williamsburg took place on 5 May 1862. Major Henry W. Smith (1836-1869) gained notoriety in 1865 for helping to capture Lewis Payne and Mrs. Surratt, who were tried and hanged for involvement in the Lincoln assassination.

Relates his receipt of a dispatch from General Foster (possibly John Gray Foster), describing the capture of Savannah, Georgia "with artillery, munitions of War, railroad Cars and cotton." Referring to Confederate General William Joseph Hardee, writes "I wish Hardee's fifteen to eighteen thousand of a garrison could have been added to the other captures. It is a good thing the way it stands and the country may well rejoice over it." Marked at the top as "Cipher."

Has a printed note after the preface indicating the Halleck was unable to see the book through press due to a change of circumstances, referring to the outbreak of the Civil War, for which Halleck was commissioned a Major-General in the United States Army on 17 August 1861.
