Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A copy of General orders No 77, dated 1 November 1, 1883, in which Sherman relinquished command of the Army of the United States. Deterioration affecting date and title at bottom. The original document was made in Washington, D.C., but the copy was created in New York, New York.
