Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Page 1 and 2 have an image of the Viriginia state seal. Piece of 19th century paper adhered to the front page has the name "W. H. DeWitt." List of the acts passed by the Confederate Congress on front page. Page 2 has several columns of news from the Congress. Article on Confederate foreign relations which states "Negro slave labor, then, may safely be assumed to be essential to the successful production of cotton in the Confederate States. If the negro were withdrawn, or his status materially changed, the crop would soon dwindle into insignficance-for none but the negro can do the work, and the compulsory power of the master is necessary to make him do it." Report that Sterling Price has been made a Major General by the Confederate Congress. Update on the work of the Virginia state Senate and House of Delegates. List of casulaties from 56th, 51st, and 36th Virginia regiments. List of graduates from the Richmond Medical College. Quick mention of a steamer leaving Norfolk, possibly to reinforce General Burnside. Advertisement for acution of "10 Negroes."
