No addressee is listed, but likely is Bradshaw Hall, register of deeds for Castine, Maine (see GLC02437.07992 for Hall's response to this letter). Encloses deeds and powers of attorney respecting the lands of the Ten Proprietors (not present). Would like Reed to record them and send them back to him by the next post. Also asks him to certify on a separate sheet that they have been recorded. Provides information on several of the proprietors and outlines what else he would like Reed to do with the documents.

Contains two letters. In the first, of 27 September, Knox writes that he was unable to call upon Rice when Knox visited the "eastern country" recently. Writes that he is an agent of part of the Waldo patent, as he is executor for the recently deceased Thomas Flucker, and a representative of Hannah Flucker. Asks Rice to send him any transactions for the land of the Waldo patent, as well as mortgages and deeds. The second letter, of 4 October, is on a similar topic.

Knox writes to Osgood, a Continental Congressman. Thanks him for the "disinterested attention" he has paid Knox in several instances. Assures Osgood he prizes their friendship highly. Reports that George Washington has instructed him to dissolve several corps and reorganize the soldiers whose terms have not expired into an infantry and artillery. Writes, "This business has been painful on account of discharging the officers and soldiers at this [severe] season without pay, and in many instances the men are miserably clad." Explains what Ely is telling his posse to inspire them to oppose Knox. Discusses the importance of government intervention in apprehending Ely, and believes it is important for the government to show it will not tolerate his sort of behavior. Possibly written by Isaac Parker, a Federalist Massachusetts Congressman, who served from 1797-1799.

Had been waiting for answers to questions respecting their business, specifically about whether bonds due to the mandamus counselors were confiscated with their other property, and therefore whether Taylor was solvent. The Courts decided finally that the bonds had been confiscated. It appears that Taylor is insolvent and has taken the bonds; his lands had been mortgaged to Mr. [Thomas] Flucker. Written from "Morris Town," which may be located in several states, including New Jersey. Declares that George Shelley and Michael Conner are two soldiers who served with the Maryland troops during the war, and would like to receive compensation such as clothes and bounty land. They are unsure how to proceed with their claim, so Lewis has enclosed one of their letters to Stagg, because he knows "of no friend that is more capable of giving information concerning [the claims] than yourself." Contains two letters. The first, dated 31 May 1792, is written by Knox to Lewis. Knox asks Lewis's opinion about features in a legal agreement between a Massachusetts Committee of the Legislature, and Henry Jackson and Royal Flint. Asks several questions. The second letter, of the same date, is written by Lewis in answer to those questions. Lewis points out that there is "much contradiction and obscurity" in the agreement, and comments on Mr. [William] Duer's role in the agreement, now that he is insolvent. All in the hand of War Department secretary Nathan Jones.
