Sylvia Reports on family. She went to the Selective Service Board. Talked about the draftees they have seen and the hard job that the Board has had and the toll it's taken on their health. Had a series of "screwballs" in Intake at work. One 82 year old man had an idea for ending the war in three months. Take Plaster of Paris up in a plane, drop it on the Germans and "Japs," pour water on them and they will all turn to stone.

Sunday afternoon: Writes that the men marched from Hagerstown, Maryland to their present site, "leaving there, last night about midnight, & halting on the route for an hour or two sleep." Says they left Hagerstown because the rebels retreated across the Potomac, so they were "ordered to the old Keystone once more." He describes the scene at Williamsport, Maryland, in which his regiment lay within four miles of the battle site, hearing "flashes & reports of the guns & musketry."…

He then writes about "Johnny Martin", a "nice kid" who had been killed. Sidney ends by apologizing for "this morbid nonsense", explaining that "sometimes the loneliness overwhelms" him. However, Sidney reports back that festivities were disturbed by an act of insubordination (a staff sergeant talking back to the company commander), a tremendous quarrel, a man being put under guard, a faint, and the man crying like a three-year old. He informs Estelle that he has been made train quartermaster for the company's next move.
