Referring to the January 1828 death of his wife Grace Fletcher Webster, states that he "lost one half of [his] interest, & motives, in all the pursuits of life; & feel very little inclined to effort of any sort." Reports that he hopes to send Mr. Pratt (possibly fellow politician and lawyer Thomas George Pratt) $500 or $1000. Relates receiving a letter from his son Daniel Fletcher Webster, who is in Boston at boarding school. Marked copied.

Informs his brother-in-law of a debate in the Senate regarding the 1828 Tariff Bill that proposed to tax certain raw and manufactured materials including molasses and hemp. States that due to disagreements with Southern Senators, several North Eastern Senators who would normally be opposed to the bill might go "against their first opinions" and support the bill, seeing "who can bear a molasses tax longest." Worries that the Bill will get lost, as only thirteen days remain in the session. Advises Paige to "calculate ... the Bill will pass." Marked private.

Reports that he enjoys the company of Paige's business partner Nathan Appleton, elected in 1830 as Massachusetts Representative, and adds that he anticipates debates about the Tarriff Bill to ensue.

Claims he almost agreed with a man from "the other side" in order to return home expediently. Continues writing on 16 October to discuss his departure for Paris, delayed so he could "put letters by the Queen" (likely Queen Victoria). States that Jaudon completed his loan 15 October.
