At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs his sister-in-law that he forwarded her previous letter to his wife. States that he received news from Paige's father, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Joseph Story. States he has settled in with Mr. Curtis (possibly New York Representative Edward Curtis), and Mr. Evans (possibly Maine Representative George Evans), as well as his French and law books. Docket states that this letter contains an enclosing from "La'Salle" (not present).
