McParlin asks that an original letter of introduction written by Ulysses S. Grant and sent to President Chester A. Arthur be returned to him (the original being deposited in White House files). McParlin transcribes in his own hand the text of the letter and asks that this serve as a substitute so that he can get the original back. He asked because he considered the letter, which commends his service in the Civil War, more valuable to himself and his family since Grant had recently died. Written on stationery of the Assistant Medical Purveyor's Office, U.S. Army.

McParlin sends news of himself and asks for more letters from his wife. Writes about life and work at the hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. Comments on religion, friends, and food. Has been so cold that he has been using his "buffalo robe." Troops and officers received apples from the "patriotic merchants" of New York and turkey as well for Thanksgiving. There is text loss where the year was written and elsewhere along the edges of the paper.

Docket contains signed note regarding blockade ship assignments; may be in Jenkins' hand with his signature. Fitzhugh was a commodore in the US Navy, noted for his capture of the Confederate Ironclad Missouri in June of 1865.

Copy of a letter discussing naval strategy and suggesting that Pensacola, Florida be warned, in case a Confederate ram tries a sneak attack there. Says the rebel rams Tennessee and Baltic are nearby. Written on board the U.S.S. Calhoun, in the Mississippi Sound, during the blockade of Mobile Bay. Farragut was the first Admiral in the United States navy and Commander-in-Chief of the U. S. Navy during the Civil War.

Enclosing twenty copies [not present] each "of 2 circulars issued by the Bureau of Ordnance" with orders to distribute them to all the vessels on Marchand's station. Written on board the U.S.S. Hartford, of which Percival was captain, off Pensacola, Florida, during the Union blockade of major Southern ports. On "Western Gulf Squadron" stationery. Drayton was Fleet Captain to Farragut, who was commanding the West Gulf Blockading Squadron. As commander of the "Hartford," Drayton fought in the Battle of Mobile Bay. He was appointed Chief of the Bureau of Navigation the next year.

The New England Women's Auxiliary Association encourages women to assist in the efforts of the United States Sanitary Commission. Describing the organization, the Commission states, "It gives its aid whenever and wherever it is most needed ... following in the steps of the Government- as a woman may often in those of a man- alleviating where it cannot prevent; working in season and out of season, for humanity's and mercy's sake." Appeals to the women of New England to donate "money, clothes, socks, yarn, feather, or other available materials" for use by soldiers.
