At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Relays a message from "the Admiral" asking Marchand to forward certain mails and discusses a trading ship that is overcharging for its goods. Docket notes "Reporting the 'Pelican States' violation of Revenue law." Written on board the U.S.S. Octorara, which Low commanded during the Union blockade of Mobile, Alabama.
