Sherman, and Confederate General Johnston, the officers and men of the army must not take up arms against the United States. Written by Hudson as Acting Master on the USS "Shepherd Knapp." Signed at least five times by Hudson, including once on the cover. A note on the inside cover says he lived on Franklin Avenue at East Brooklyn, New York (the second house on the right above Van Buren Street -- he later moved up Franklin Avenue above Myrtle Street). Several doodle drawings, presumably by Hudson, are also on the first few pages of the book. Stanton asks Lincoln to provide a citation to an Act of Congress that excluded improper applicants from seats in House of Representatives which Lincoln has mentioned to him previously. Lincoln's note on the verso gives the citation for the act and states he got the information from John Armor Bingham, a Representative from Ohio. The act referred to was "An Act to regulate the Duties of the Clerk of the House of Representatives in preparing for the Organization of the House," approved 3 March 1863. Banks recommends that "the Rifle shooters what Mr. Berdan proposes to organize" be made part of the military, and Wadsworth adds, "I entirely concur in the above - especially in view of the mode of warfare adopted by the rebels."

Over 200 letters from Sergeant Elmore to his wife, with an additional 60 from his wife. Highlights include pursuit of Lee's army after Gettysburg, the siege of Atlanta, Sherman's march to the sea, and other campaigns. Also includes several loose pages of an informal diary kept by Elmore during the March to the Sea, which he mailed home to his wife upon reaching Savannah. Elmore was discharged in July 1865.

Woodlin's brief entries describe camp life, his service with the regimental band as a horn player, several battles, the weather, equal pay with white soldiers, and the famous 54th Massachusetts Regiment, among many other topics. He describes his part in the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, where his regiment arrived two months after fighting began. The middle section of this journal includes blank leaves, followed by several pages of notes and lists. The diary was rebound, but includes the separated original cover.

First edition published by Little Brown. Inscribed in pencil on the titlepage by S. W. Bridgham to "Mrs. Ives." Wormeley was a prominent organizer of women's aid societies in New England during the Civil War. She also served on U.S. Sanitary Commission hospital ships along the Virginia peninsula. She became "Lady Superintendent" of the Lowell General Hospital in September 1862, but poor health forced her to give up the position.
