Discusses a rumor in camp that the Army Corps have been ordered to return to their home State to be mustered out of the service. Appears to be a prayer. Throughout the document the Trinity and Mary are called upon. There is a passage at the end of the document that is written in English. "A true & approbiate [sic] fever knowledge that whosoever has this letter in his house no fire will Break out in the hous [sic] Whosoevers has this letter with him or in his house is safe before the sicke & Pestilence." No date or signature is given. Possibly written by Russell during his last days of sickness.

Letter by E. Lane, who was formerly Chief Justice of the State of Ohio, with a note by Noah H. Swayne, a Supreme Court justice. Writes to inform Lincoln that Thomas M. Root will accept the appointment of District Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. Follows with his opinion of Root's character and recommends him highly. With a note signed by Swayne, dated 28 February 1865, endorsing Lane as fully competent to speak on the subject.

Has attached his signature to a statement for the National Tribune giving his impressions of April 2, 1865, a day Abraham Lincoln came to visit City Point hospital and so impressed a Confederate prisoner that he swore to not raise arms against the government again (see GLC05603.18). Relays that he cannot send autographs of the officers of the Maryland Regiments because he does not have them.

Signed as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant, 1st Maryland Volunteer Infantry. Relates an incident at City Point hospital on 2 April 1865, where President Abraham Lincoln met a Confederate soldier and treated him with great kindness. After Lincoln left, the Confederate soldier asked "Who did you say that man was?" When he learned it was Lincoln, he declared that if other Confederates could meet Lincoln, they would lay down their arms and go home. According to Smith, the Confederate soldier exclaimed, "If God spares my life, I will never again raise my arms against the United States Government…

Sumner asks if the Brig Dante entered his port in May or June and the entrance and clearance times. Mr. Henshaw's reply appears at the bottom of page two. He states the Brig Dante entered on 25 May 1836 and left on 28 May 1836 according to his records.
