At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One note from Jane Moline to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated December 18, 1973. Moline is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "I wish you could have attended the breakfast for the president (supporting him), last Saturday, at the Ambassador. You would have had quite a 'lift' I know!"
