At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from John D'Alioa to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 31, 1974. D'Alioa is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Congress should take divisive action on impeachment, one way or the other, in due haste, so that the administration and the opposition can get back to governing the country. I am against impeachment."
