These are the papers of Gideon Savage relative to the settlement of the estate of Aaron White. White was Savage's father-in-law. White died in the West Indies 31 January 1782.

Marked "Plate 40." Depicts a family of former enslaved people who just came in sight of fortified lines of the Union Army. An old mother is praying to God on her knees, while the rest of her family from behind are contemplating the scene. Actual size of the image without the margins is 27.1 x 39.5 cm. Title and image information taken from the table of contents. Top edge is frayed where it appears the page was torn from the binding of the book.

Order from the Governor of North Carolina, regarding reorganization of North Carolina Volunteers into regiments, signed by Riddick as Assistant Adjutant General. Places Captain George Wortham in charge of Company 2, the Granville Greys, in Weldon, North Carolina. The regiment would be known as the Twelfth North Carolina Volunteers. Col. Richard H. Riddick of Pender's Brigade, 34th North Carolina, was mortally wounded at Second Bull Run.

Hargrove, recruiting in Granville County, North Carolina, writes to a fellow infantryman regarding recruiting and "family" (possibly military company) affairs. Letter was initially sent in a letter to George Wortham, GLC02233.05, for forwarding to Rowland. Also encloses a copy of a circular (no longer present), which has left an ink burn on the verso reading "To Arms! To Arms! Our Fatherland is in Danger." Alexander W. Rowland was a corporal in Company D of the Twelfth North Carolina Infantry.

"I have met with some incouragement but whether I can succeed in getting many recruits or not I can't say positively to day as there is but few persons in Town I will go out to the country this Evening and try the young men of my acquaintance & see what can be done as soon as possible." Written by Landis, an officer under Wortham's command, and signed by over fifty members of the company. Docket, in Wortham's hand, states the petition was "Got up by Lieut Landis (who wished promotion) during my absence and disavowed by all but sixteen of the signers. Those who disavowed it resented how Landis used threats &c to procure signatures." Those who later disavowed the petition have the word "denied" penciled next to their names. Title: Charges and specifications preferred against 1st lieutenant A Landis Jr of the 2d Regt. North Carolina Volunteers

Charges Landis with violating the sixth and forty-fourth articles of war and with "conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline." Charges resulted from Landis's failure to report for "guard mounting" and subsequent "violent, insulting and insubordinate language" directed towards Wortham, his superior officer. Excerpt: "…On Capt. Wortham replying 'I will be treated with respect in my office' the said Lieut A. Landis Jr. of the 2d Regiment of North Carolina Volunteer did say 'Damn you' or 'damn it' 'I treat you with as much respect as you deserve' or words to that effect…

Bond informs Wortham of General Junius Daniel's orders: "you will detail from your command as extra duty men, three non-commissioned officers and twelve men to report to Private Briggins, (as early tomorrow as possible), who is in charge of the saw mill at Wartein's. He also desires that you will select a suitable position for your winter quarters and set about building them immediately."Written at Drewry's Bluff battlefield.

Written from "Gill's Signal Station." Saunders writes as the Sergeant in command of the Station: "I send…a man who came to my station today. He says he is from Philadelphia and just out of "Castle Thunder" Richmond. I do not think he is altogether right, as contradicted himself several times in his statements." Castle Thunder in Richmond was a tobacco warehouse converted into a prison during the Civil War. Prisoners, many of whom were under sentence of death, were primarily civilians, they included violent criminals, Union sympathizers, and spies, among them Dr. Mary E. Walker.
