At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "Plate 40." Depicts a family of former enslaved people who just came in sight of fortified lines of the Union Army. An old mother is praying to God on her knees, while the rest of her family from behind are contemplating the scene. Actual size of the image without the margins is 27.1 x 39.5 cm. Title and image information taken from the table of contents. Top edge is frayed where it appears the page was torn from the binding of the book.
