An oval-shaped print of a photograph of Brigadier General George Stoneman (1822-1894) and four other officers sit on horses while Union soldiers stand on top of a cabin, stretching a canvas across the open roof. A tent has been erected next to the cabin and a woman dressed in a dark dress stands in front. An inscription on the reverse side reads: "Building winter quarters. Hedley says that the Brig. gen. in this plate should be easily identified. 15842 War." Title taken from this. Also stamped on back is "Art Department, The Century Co., 33 East 17th St., New York City."

A print of nine Union officers. Photo was most likely taken in Washington. Two women peer from a window on the left hand side of the image. A young boy wearing a cap sits in front of the men. The soldier to the far left holds a bugle, while the soldier to the far right wears a gray uniform, possibly a state guard or local militia uniform. Present are a colonel or major (second from right upper row) and 1st lieutenant (upper row right-most). Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXXI 875."

A print of a photograph of the Washington, DC headquarters of Brigadier General Hardin. Brigadier General Martin D. Hardin put was in command ofthe defenses of Washington from 1864 to the end of the war. He is just left of the tree on the corner, missing the left arm he lost in Confederate guerrilla ambush. The glass of the lamp post on the corner reads "19th Street West." The headquarters was located at the intersection of 19th St. NW and Pennsylvania Ave. The crowd consists mainly of well dressed civilian men and women with a few soldiers. The flag has six red and six white horizontal stripes and is bordered with gold braiding. Painted in the stripes are the names and dates of battles. He also mentions Forbes's complaint of injustice on the part of "Mr. Seward" (possible William Henry Seward) regarding the steamship Meteor court case. The collection contains 136 letters (122 war-date) mostly from Private Christian M. Epperly to his wife, Mary Epperly, living in Floyd County. The collection also contains a few letters from Mary Epperly to her husband. Throughout the war, Epperly's units consistently managed to avoid major engagements until the Atlanta Campaign of 1864. In his letters, Epperly frequently discusses deserting the Confederacy.
