At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Mrs. Stanley, the mother of Lucius T. Stanley, that there are currently no openings for a lieutenant in the 107th New York Volunteers, but states that the New York Governor, Reuben E. Fenton, is interested in helping Lucius. Written on State of New York, Executive Department stationary. Mrs. Stanley's maiden name was Warner. Hastings was the governor's private secretary.
