At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph of Midshipman Jesse L. Brown, US Navy dated October 1948. Photographed at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, while serving as a Naval Aviation Cadet. Brown was the first African American to complete Navy flight training. Jesse Brown was a hero fighter pilot and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, and also the first African American naval officer killed in the Korean War.
