At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Omer H. Kelpe to Virginia Heidt Kelpe in a letter dated August 26, 1944. Clipping features a comic with two wives drinking tea. The caption reads, "I seldom see my husband. When he isn't away on a fishing trip he's down in the basement tying feathers and things on fishhooks."
