At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One greeting card addressed to Lynn J. Knapp from "Tippie," dated May 7, 1943. Front of card contains an image of a soldier receiving orders from "Uncle Sam." Insert depicts the soldier holding a list that details attacking each member of the Axis (Germany, Italy, and Japan). Back of card contains a letter from Tippie. Details that they were trying to get a hold of Roberta.
