At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One document entitled Note Received From the Swiss Government August 10, 1945, dated August 11, 1945. Contains a communication from the Japanese Minister through the Swiss government to the United States government. The communication announces that, "The Japanese Government are ready to accept the terms enumerated in the joint declaration which was issued at Potsdam on July 26, 1945".
