At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collection of items belonging to Leonard F. Baudoux dated 1941-1945. Consists of letters belonging to Baudoux pertaining to his service during World War II while enlisted in the Army as a technician. Majority of letters are sent from family members providing updates of their daily lifes. Notably are illustrations sent from his younger siblings. Also included are letters from his younger brother who served on the west coast.
