Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph dated September 1946 of Jewish refugees at Ziegenhain camp. Pictured are lister bags, which are water bags used to purify drinking water for military troops normally, and refugees by sleeping quarters. Text on the reverse of the image states that this was the only water supply at the camp.
