At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from R.L. Brannon to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated May 4, 1974. Brannon encloses a letter and newsclipping. States that they are related to bias of the Judiciary Committee. They write, "...19 members of the HJC have been more or less subsidized by Mr. George Meany's... to the tune of $191,000."
