At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mel Norman to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated August 9, 1974. Norman is against the impeachment of President Nixon. States that Watergate is a poor reflection of the America's moral quality. He writes, "I still say the whole Watergate thing is a symptom of our times - a definite reflection of the people in our U.S.!!!"
