At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Carl and Elsie Alford to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated circa January 1974. The Alfords's are against the impeachment of President Nixon. The clipping contains three forms to be filled out by the senders. Each form is designed to be clipped out and sent to different people. The Alfords clipped out the whole section and sent all three as one item to Moorhead.
