At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled "The United Nations Fight for Freedom" dated 1942. Features the head and raised arm of the Statue of Liberty on a black background. To the right of lady liberty are the flags of thirty countries fighting the Axis powers during World War II. These countries include; United States, Great Britain, Soviet Russia, China, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Greece, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Panama, Philippines, Poland, South America and Yugoslavia.
