At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Robert Williams to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated March 29, 1974. Williams supports the impeachment of President Nixon. Attached to the letter are three newspaper clippings related to fiscal responsibility, the War Powers Bill and subpoena powers. Williams believed that Moorhead’s vote obstructed justice.
