At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Louise Jordan to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. Jordan is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "I am tired of the Democrats and the press and television all being out to get Mr. Nixon. I do hope you will not join in such castigation."
