At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Joan Hanes to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. Hanes is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "After all, our president has not committed any murder, sold our secrets, has not embezzled any public funds, I find him guilty of picking a bunch of disloyal, self seeking, supposed to be workers."
